Mathematical equations: This course will use wave equation, heat conduction equation and field potential equation as examples for initial value problem, boundary value problem and mixed problem. Overview methods including method to solve the linear partial differential equation of characteristic lines, the separation of variables method, the integral transform method, Green function method and variational method, as well as special functions frequently used in physics. Theory issues such as the inherent value problem of a self-adjoint operator, the generalized solution of the generalized function will be introduced according to different Department’s requirement.
The teaching goal and requirements of this course is to help students understand and grasp the basic thought and main methods to get the exact solutions of the linear partial differential equation, to cultivate students' capability to solve mathematical problems raised by physics and other fields with mathematical tools, to lay a preliminary basis for follow-up professional course for undergraduate students and the future research or practical work.
Atomic physics: This course introduces the preliminary basic concepts of quantum mechanics, on the basis of introducing the microscopic structure of the matter and interaction, including atomic molecular physics and nuclear physics. It requires students to focus on understanding the basic physical phenomena, experimental facts and the concept of physics, and to learn to deal with simple atoms and simple homonuclear diatomic molecular energy levels and spectrum, nuclear properties and nuclear structure problems. Main lectures involve atomic model and single electron atom, introductory quantum mechanics, atomic magnetic moment and electron spin, helium atoms and molecular structure of multi-electron atoms and molecule, molecular spectroscopy, the basic properties and structure of the nucleus, etc..
