At last firemen have put out a big forest fire in California. Since then they have been trying to find out how the fire began. Forest fires are often caused by broken glass or by cigarette ends which people carelessly throw away. This morning, however, a fireman accidentally discovered the cause. He noticed the remains of a snake which was wound round the electric wires of a 16000-volt power line. In this way, he was able to slove the mystrey. The explaination was simple but very unusual. A bird had snatched up the snake from the ground and then dropped it on to the wires. The snake then wound itself round the wires. As it did so, it sent sparks down to the ground and these immediately started a fire.

1其实时态如果从前往后数的话应该是 过去完成→现在完成=过去→现在.既然是过去发生的事情而且强调的是对现在的影响自然用现在完成时.强调过去的过去发生的事情对过去的影响才用过去完成时.
2用进行时有一种延续的感觉.用had been growing there,即过去完成进行时,能表示树从过去的过去一直生长并且在过去还在生长,但如果用had grown there,只能说明树在过去的过去生长过,但不知道在过去还是否生长（有些绕,你把“过去”看做一个时间点）.所以第一种说法更加贴切

后面说的那些检查地面，发现蛇这些事用的是过去时啊，火在这之前就扑灭了，应该是过去的过去，应该用过去完成时才对啊，为什么文中不用呢，

火的确是在过去的过去就被扑灭了，但它表示大火在现在是灭了的，因为失火是在“过去”发生的，所以扑灭这件事不可能比失火还靠前，故只能影响现在，用现在完成时。但后面关于大火的解释明显对过去造成了影响，一定用过去完成时。 望采纳
