Instead, an interpolation of the boundary in the longitudinal log direction was preferred. Fig. 4a shows a board which was reconstructed from 100 consecutive slices (corresponding to 1min length) of the same log as the one used in Fig. 3.The board passed through the knot located in the upper-right part of the cross-section shown in Fig. 3a (dashed line,angle = 330◦). Fig. 4b shows the corresponding plot (grey curve) of the distance dij as a function of the slice number i (here, we worked on a given radius and the radius angle j was fixed). The local minima of the dij profile clearly corresponded to the knots which were visible on the board (Fig. 4a). Interpolations at the locations of these minima were necessary to obtain a good approximation of the heartwood/sapwood boundary. In the longitudinal direction, the interpolations were easier to perform because a given knot appeared only on a very limited number of consecutive slices. To determine the interpolation extent, the second derivative of the dij profile (represented by a black solid line in Fig. 4b) was computed using a second derivative Gaussian filter. Local maxima of the second derivative above a fixed threshold of 5 (upper arrow in Fig. 4b) were used to identify minima due to the presence of knots in the dij plot.For each knot, the bounds of the area to be interpolated were defined by the two local minima located on both sides of the local maximum (arrows in Fig. 4b).
